| 1st....do the ol cleaning thing with hot soapy water, then I use some 600 grit sandpaper to rough up the surface (except on the windows) to give the paint a little more tooth to hang on to. |
| I made the masking for this one by designing it on my computer so I could print out both sides accurately. I used the slick paper that the window masking came on and put down some green masking tape which holds a very good edge, but I can only find it in 1 inch wide rolls so I had to over lap several stripes. I then held my lazer print over the top and carefully cut out the design with my exacto knife. The picture on the right is what is left after the mask is removed. | |
| Here you can see the flames applied. The dark flames in the middle were reused from a previous paint job...they can be used a couple times if removed carefully. I have the back masked off for the neon red that is to light to paint first. | |
| I sprayed the blue as a glowline around everything and then put down some metalic turquoise which gives the design some depth. This color is very opaque but I put an undercoat of white just to be on the safe side. I had to add that little custom effec of the flames going over the windows. | |
| Next the entire back was given about 3 think coats of neon red, then backed with pearl white. White, Silver or Pearl White work very well as a backing color. |
| The picture on the left shows how a piece of thick paper is used as a simple mask to put a shadow on the flames without taping everything for each piece. In the tight areas I just cut an arch on the paper to fit the angle of the flame. I put a very thin coat fading out....to thick and it will not look correct...this should be a subtle effect like a shadow really is. The neon yellow painted next will bleed with the red fade making it orange and appear very smooth. I put a little white on the very knose of this top and faded it back as you can see in the pictures below which accents the white wing on the back. The red stripe on the bottom was painted last and faded from yellow on the front to the main neon red on the back. | |
| Pictures do not show how very bright this paint job really is....it glows!. Film cannot capture the neon correctly and the lower picture shows orange...this is actually neon red. I hope this inspires some creative paint jobs...send in those pics. | ||
